THE POSITION:
 
The City of Hemet is seeking highly motivated, career and community oriented Police Officers to fill current and anticipated vacancies in the department.  The ideal candidates should be able to apply the concepts of community oriented policing, while maintaining an effective enforcement profile.
 
Hemet PD offers a variety of special assignment positions including motorcycle officer, school resource officer, investigator, narcotics officer, field training officer, gang officer, canine handler, and SWAT.  Patrol officers currently work mixed 3/12 and 4/10 shifts.  Other non-traditional work schedules have been implemented by various bureaus within the department.  Currently the City also deploys an assigned vehicle program for officers.

Summary Description

Under general supervision, performs various law enforcement duties in order to protect life and property and provide service to the public. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of contemporary professional law enforcement techniques and practices.
  • Ability to read and understand department rules, procedures, laws, and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities.
  • Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively deal with various racial, ethnic, and economic groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
  • High school graduation or GED Certificate.
Certification/License and/or Special Requirements:
  • Successful completion or enrollment into a California P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy.
  • Must have attained age 21 upon time of appointment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license and satisfactory driving record.
Physical Requirements:
  • Uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better in both eyes and must be corrected to 20/20 in one eye, 20/30 in the other eye. Normal color vision.
  • Normal hearing. 
  • Ability to work under physical and mental pressures and in potentially hazardous situations.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions associated with law enforcement, i.e. run after fleeing suspects, accurately use and qualify with issued equipment including firearms and batons, drive a police vehicle for extended periods of time, have the strength and ability to defend against attacking suspects, take physical control of violent suspects, move, drag or carry persons from danger.

Police Officer- Lateral and Academy Enrolled/Graduate

Special Compensation:
  • $1,345 per year Uniform Allowance
  • Longevity Pay: stipend of 5% of base salary per month for members with 10 years or more of service as a sworn peace officer
  • Certificate Incentive Program:
    2.5% stipend of base salary per month for holding P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate or Bachelor's degree
    2.5% stipend of base salary per month for holding P.O.S.T. Advanced Certificate or Master's degree
  • 10% stipend of base salary for assignment as Field Training Officer
  • $125 per pay period when on mandatory Standby Assignment
  • 2.5% stipend of base salary per month Bilingual Compensation upon certification (Spanish language)
Healthcare Coverage:
  • Employer contribution of $1,028.81 for employee and dependent(s) medical coverage
  • $50 per month employer contribution to employees' deferred compensation plan (in lieu of any other retiree health insurance benefit)
Dental & Vision Coverage:
  • Employer paid dental & vision coverage for employee and dependent(s)
Life & Long Term Disability Insurance:
  • $50,000 employer paid term life insurance policy
  • Employer paid long term disability insurance
Educational Reimbursement:
  • $2,000 per calendar year*
Leave:
  • 96 hours Vacation per year for first 3 years, increased based on longevity to a maximum of 168 hours per year after 12 full years of service
  • 8 hours Sick Leave per month
  • 11 paid Holidays per year
  • 3 days per year Serious Family Illness Leave (shall not accrue)
  • 3 days per year Bereavement Leave (shall not accrue)
Retirement:

The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS)
  • Classic Members: 3% at 55 Formula, final compensation based on highest twelve month period. City contracts for military buy back provision.  Employee contributes 12% (no Social Security deduction).
  • PEPRA (New) Members: 2.7% at 57 Formula, final compensation based on a three-year average. Employee contributes one-half of the normal cost of pension benefits, which is currently 12% (no Social Security deduction).
*Upon successful completion of probation
