Examples of Duties

This is an excellent opportunity for an advanced skilled journeyman level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of medium and low voltage electrical and electronic control systems found in the water/wastewater treatment and pumping facilities. This position performs skilled electrical and electronic repair tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electrical and electronics trade. Work involves the mechanical and operational aspects of water/wastewater treatment equipment and its installation. Incumbent is expected to exercise sound judgement and initiative in resolving complex electric, electronic, electro/mechanical and other maintenance related problems. Assignments are made either orally or through written orders such as Maximo work orders and may be accompanied by diagrams or blueprints. Work is reviewed through completion records, conferences and observation of results obtained. Good communication and a high level of documentation is an important function of this position. A strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.  Performs other related work as required. Must follow safety procedures and promote a safe work environment and comply with OSHA respiratory guidelines regarding facial hair. Applicant must be able to pass a pulmonary function medical test. Must obtain Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification within two years of hire. This position is classified as "Essential". Incumbent will be required to work overtime during and after hurricanes or other disasters and be available to respond to emergency calls days, nights, weekends and holidays in a timely manner.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a Journeyman Electrical Certificate of Competency as recognized by Broward County or the State of Florida, Master's license preferred. Must possess a minimum of five years' experience in the direct operation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment associated with water/wastewater treatment facilities or heavy industrial facility. A two-year Associates Degree in Electronics or higher preferred. Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's license, CDL preferred. In depth technical & Electro-Mechanical knowledge & skills for repairing, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, transformers, switch gear of voltage from 12 volts to 13,000 volts and other electrical apparatus related to the operation of treatment plants, booster stations, storage tanks and other related facilities. Working knowledge of computer systems, SCADA instrumentation and controls including PLC programming. Extensive knowledge of local and national electrical codes. Knowledge of trade occupational hazards and appropriate precautionary safety procedures, particularly as they pertain to work on medium and low voltage electrical systems and equipment, skilled in the care and use of standard and special electrical tools and testing equipment. Ability to anticipate and plan for expanded electrical needs. Candidates must possess effective communication skills with the ability to speak, write and understand English. Ability to effectively supervise and manage staff and contractors and provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Maximo asset management programs and SCADA preferred. Testing will be conducted on MS Office products and reading schematics as part of the interview process.  Ability to perform moderate moving up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally perform moving up to 75 lbs. Must have ability to detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.  Exposure to chemicals, machinery hazards and adverse outdoor weather conditions. Physical abilities include seeing, hearing, talking, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and climbing.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.

Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.

Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue ten (10) days annually; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – twelve (12) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.

Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 7% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last five base salary years times 2% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable.  Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.

Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, and an employee assistance program.

Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
