General Purpose

This position requires that you possess and maintain a valid Certificate as a "Certified Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide verbal interpretations of questions, testimony, arguments and other courtroom proceedings for defendants, judges, counsel, jurors, witnesses and others; translate written materials and legal documents in the courtroom.

Examples of Essential Duties; Minimum Qualifications

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification.  This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required.

 

1.     Interpret verbal testimony, questions, arguments, verdicts and other proceedings in a court of law.

 

2.     Provide interpreter services at a wide variety of court-related activities including but not limited to arraignment, hearings, plea bargaining, penalties, bail review, probation violation, sentencing, mental competency hearings, adoptions, restraining order hearings and other proceedings.

 

3.     Interpret polygraph examinations, recorded interviews and interrogations.

 

4.     Translate written materials and documents including sight translations.

 

5.     Assure that defendants, counsel, judges, witnesses and others have a clear and accurate translation of verbal interaction and written materials involved in court proceedings.

 

6.     Communicate with other County personnel in various departments regarding translations and interpretations.

 

7.     Travel to branch courts as needed to provide interpreter services.

 

8.     Translate and interpret legal documents, slang expressions and street language.

Education & Experience; Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to:  consistent with requirements set by the State of California for a Certified Court Interpreter.

 

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid Certificate as a "Certified Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California.

A valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Court's vehicle insurance policy.

Misc Information / Scheduled Exams

Knowledge of:

·         Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.

·         Oral and written communication skills.

·         Legal procedures and terminology.

·         Simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation techniques.

·         Translation of street language including slang, profanity and colloquialisms.

·         Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

·         Code of ethics and rules of confidentiality applicable to interpreting.

 

Ability to:

·         Interpret verbal court proceedings including questions, testimony, arguments and other audible exchanges in a court of law.

·         Translate written materials including reports, letters, legal documents and other items.

·         Travel to branch courts to interpret proceedings for non-English speaking defendants.

·         Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.

·         Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

·         Stand in court for extended periods of time.

·         Provide clear and accurate translations and interpretations of superior court proceedings.
