GENERAL INFORMATION
 
This recruitment is limited to persons who must have successfully completed a California POST or STC certified P.C. 832 Arrest and Control course, STC certified Probation Officer Core course, be currently employed on a full-time basis in the classification of Deputy Probation Officer or comparable classification by a California County Probation Department, been hired through a comparable competitive hiring process, and possess one year or more of successful work experience as a Deputy Probation Officer.  While this is a continuous recruitment, we encourage you to apply immediately as this recruitment may close at any time.  Applications that do not meet the qualifications listed above will not be considered for this recruitment.  Applicants who do not meet the qualifications for this recruitment are encouraged to apply for the entry-level Deputy Probation Officer recruitment if active and available.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Stanislaus County Probation Department serves as an integral component of the community and the criminal justice system by providing adult and youth offender community supervision, accountability, rehabilitation, education, life skills programming, and direct services that also support families and victims.  In addition, the Department operates safe and secure youth custodial facilities and offers a variety of positive behavioral conditioning, counseling therapy, job skills, and alternatives to custody programs.  The Department consists of four divisions: Adult Field Services, Juvenile Field Services, Institution Services, and Support Services with over 286 allocated administrative, support, and sworn peace officer positions and an operational budget of $53.1 million.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Lateral Transfer Deputy Probation Officer classification is a journey-level sworn peace officer position for persons who must have successfully completed a California POST or STC certified P.C. 832 Arrest and Control course, STC certified Probation Officer Core course, be currently employed on a full-time basis in the classification of Deputy Probation Officer or comparable classification by a California County Probation Department, been hired through a comparable competitive hiring process, and possess one year or more of successful work experience as a Deputy Probation Officer.   Lateral Transfer candidates may qualify for additional hiring incentives. 

Officers may be assigned to intake, investigation, supervision, courts, or multi-agency collaborative projects in Adult or Juvenile Field Services in a variety of locations within Stanislaus County.  Incumbents may be required to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, are subject to overtime, standby, callback assignments, and related duties as assigned.  Incumbents are also required to successfully meet and maintain Department firearms qualifications standards and may be required to carry a firearm on duty.
 
Deputy Probation Officer assignments involve the possibility of bodily injury, dealing with angry, hostile and potentially combative clientele, and exposure to infectious diseases that can cause chronic illness or death. Some positions include exposure to offensive odors and bodily fluids, and exposure to chemical weapons such as O.C.

Full time Deputy Probation Officers may receive assignment pay in addition to the base salary as follows:
  • 3% for successfully passing State certified Probation Officer CORE training.
  • 2.5% armed qualification pay for maintaining Department arming qualification standards.
  • 2.5% armed assignment pay to work in a designated armed position.

Typical Tasks

TYPICAL TASKS
  • Reviews law enforcement or court referrals and applies State law and departmental policy to determine appropriate recommendation and disposition;
  • Interviews offenders, family members, victims and others critical to appropriate case disposition;
  • Accesses and comprehends law enforcement, school, mental health, social services and other reference materials;
  • Provides monitoring and supervision of offenders under court order or departmental disposition. This entails face-to-face contact with offenders, family members, law enforcement, employers, victims and other public or private agencies that provide service or supervision to the offender. These contacts may take place within the office, various custodial facilities, the offender's home, school or place of work, or at various community locations;
  • Accurately and objectively prepares memos, court reports, statistical reports, etc.;
  • Testifies in court as required;
  • Transports probationers as necessary or required;
  • Conducts drug testing of probationers;
  • Conducts searches of a probationer, his/her residence or vehicle as authorized by court order and departmental policy;
  • Arrests probationers as authorized by State law and departmental policy;
  • Locates, brokers and monitors social services to aid probationer and his/her family;
  • Attends training classes, meetings, etc.;
  • Develops and monitors individualized case plans and case file materials to assist probationer to comply with the law, court order and achieve law abiding productive lifestyle;
  • Develops, monitors and reports on job performance and performance based outcome measures; and
  • Arranges for payment of restitution and fines.

Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Ability, Knowledge, Education/Experience)

SKILLS/ABILITY 

DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER I
  • Read and comprehend complex written materials, including legal documents, psychological evaluations and other technical reports;
  • Communicate effectively in the English language both orally and in writing;
  • Deal effectively with criminal offenders, including potentially hostile and aggressive individuals;
  • Analyze investigative materials and make proper deductions;
  • Work cooperatively with law enforcement and other allied agencies;
  • Learn to use computer terminals and personal computers for word processing, data entry and retrieval, and other applications;
  • Successfully complete required training, that may involve overnight assignments away from home;
  • Work well under considerable pressure and with deadlines for work completion;
  • Learn to use radios, defensive chemical weapons, firearms and mechanical physical restraints;
  • Operate a motor vehicle;
  • Read or see objects under ambient, limited or artificial lighting and at a reasonable distance with sufficient clarity to permit their recording or accurate description, i.e., persons, items of property, written messages, printed materials, etc.;
  • Hear normal speech and other audible events (with or without environmental noise); and
  • Successfully complete Probation Officer core training course within the first 12-months of appointment, as prescribed by the Corrections Standards Authority.
DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER II - Possess all of the SKILLS/ABILITY for DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER I plus
  • Write clear and concise reports and make appropriate recommendations;
  • Work independently without excessive supervision; and
  • Work on special projects with others in a participatory group process.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Principles of human behavior, communication, adult and juvenile probation and applicable court procedures;
  • State laws and County ordinances affecting adult and juvenile probation; and
  • Modern casework techniques applicable to probation work.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
 
DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER I
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree in any field, preferably one of the Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Corrections, or a related field of study at the time of appointment. Proof of degree is required by the date of hire; AND
  • Completion of a certified Probation Officer Core training course as prescribed by the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC); AND
  • Completion of certified California POST or STC approved P.C. 832 Arrest and Control training.

DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER II - all of the EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER II plus
  • At least one year of work experience as a Deputy Probation Officer I or comparable classification by a California County Probation Department.
LICENSE
  • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and remain free from repeated preventable accidents.

CLASSIFICATION INFORMATION
 
Unless otherwise provided, this position if part of the Classified service of the County and is assigned to the Stanislaus County Probation Corrections Officer Association (SCDPOA) bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.
 
Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months for a total of eighteen months.  The probationary period does not apply to unclassified positions.

Conditional Offer Examinations – Pass/Fail: Candidates selected to continue on from the Background Investigation will be given a conditional offer of employment and subject to pre-employment exams.
