The Coconino County Justice Courts will be accepting applications for the position of Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore (Pro Tem) in the Page Justice Court. The person selected for this position will be appointed by the Superior Court Presiding Judge or his designee and approval from the Board of Supervisors.

NATURE OF WORK

The Justice of the Peace Pro Tem will be responsible for the occasional hearing and determination of traffic, misdemeanor, civil and small claims cases, orders of protection and injunctions against harassment hearings arising within the jurisdiction of the Justice Court, Page Precinct, in the absence of the elected Justice of the Peace. The selected candidate may also be scheduled to perform weekend or holiday initial appearances and/or arraignments, and hear cases as assigned in which there may be a conflict for the Justice of the Peace. This position offers intellectual challenges to incumbents whether or not they have a law degree. The impartial administration of justice in a small community and where decisions can make major impacts on people's lives can be stressful.

Typical Duties

TERMS AND LOCATION OF APPOINTMENT

The selected candidate will be appointed as an at-will, exempt employee of the Superior Court Presiding Judge. The Justice of the Peace Pro Tem may be subject to assignment in any limited jurisdiction court in Coconino County, although the primary assignment is the Page Precinct. The selected candidate may also be asked to hear "conflict" cases in other courts. The Superior Court Presiding Judge makes these appointments for not more than 12 months, at which time previously appointed at-will Judicial Officers such as Pro Tems, Commissioners and Hearing Officers may be reappointed without competition.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

The person(s) selected for this position must be of good moral character and a resident of this State for one year next preceding their taking office. Candidates shall also be qualified electors of the State for not less than one year next preceding his/her appointment. When assigned to specific cases or if working in the Court on a regularly scheduled basis, the candidate must conform his or her actions to the Code of Judicial Conduct, promoting confidence in the integrity, competence and impartiality of the Court.

Strong Preference will be given to qualified candidates who reside in the Page Judicial Precinct.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The compensation rate for this part-time position is based upon experience. The selected candidate may be asked to attend or participate in training at a negotiated level of compensation. The incumbent is not eligible for Coconino County benefits.
