General Statement of Duties

Eugene Springfield Fire is recruiting full-time limited duration, part-time limited duration and part-time temporary, licensed Emergency Medical Technicians to staff basic life support medic units.  These positions are non-represented.  Applicants hired as full-time limited duration and part-time limited duration employees may receive a generous and competitive benefits package, similar to benefits received by other non-represented employees which include: Health Insurance - medical, dental, and vision; Retirement; Personal Time Off,  and more (see the additional information section of the posting for details on these excellent benefits.)  Applicants hired as part-time temporary employees will be treated the same as other temporary employees.   We anticipate that the positions will last from two to three years. 
 
This is a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and familiarity of the Eugene Springfield Fire Department.  You will also gain experience that will be beneficial should you have a desire to gain regular employment in EMS and/or Fire services, including Eugene Springfield Fire.
 
The Basic Life Support Technician (BLS Tech) is responsible for the pre-hospital care, packaging and transportation of sick and/or injured patients, primarily on code 1 scene calls within the Eugene/Springfield area. Work is performed within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT).

The purpose of this recruitment is to create a list to fill positions for Eugene Springfield Fire.  Applicants must successfully complete each step of the hiring process.  A single eligibility list will be established for use by both the City of Eugene and City of Springfield.  Using the eligibility list, management will determine which candidates are selected for each City.  Candidates will not have an option to select which City they receive an offer from.
 

Schedule Information
 
Important information about the training academy for this position:  If offered either the full-time limited duration, part-time limited duration or part-time temporary position, candidates must be available to attend an academy for a period of two and a half weeks upon hire, during which the schedule is projected to be Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.  Typically the hire date with either be a Friday or Monday, but could be any day of the week.
 
In order to get a sense of each candidate's availability we have included supplemental questions that will assist us in confirming that a candidate is able to commit to the schedule needed for the academy, as well as determine which position(s) and shift(s) a candidate is available to work.  For reference, here is a link to the shifts available.

Qualifications

Experience and Training Guidelines
High school diploma or equivalent.
 
License or Certificate:
Emergency Medical Technician (Basic or higher) license at the time of application. National Registry or candidates registered in another state with an equivalent license must meet the State of Oregon requirements for licensure and are responsible for applying for reciprocity to ensure they have an Oregon license by the date of hire.  You can view reciprocity information via the State of Oregon Public Health web-site.   A provisional license would not meet this requirement.
 
Possession of and ability to maintain American Heart Association or equivalent Health Care Provider CPR card.
 
Requires a valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

APPLICATION SCREENING 
Applications will be reviewed to determine which candidates will be invited for the Interview process.  This may include an evaluation of the supplemental questions included in the application.   

INTERVIEW PROCESS
The interview process may include job-simulation and/or physical ability practical(s), along with an interview designed to elicit an applicant's relevant skills and abilities for the job.
 
OTHER SELECTION CRITERIA
Finalists who successfully complete the screening process and interview process may continue on to a background investigation based on the business needs of the departments.  Candidates selected to move forward after the background investigations will then undergo a psychological assessment prior to the establishment of the final eligibility list. 
 
FINALISTS SELECTED FOR IMMEDIATE HIRE OFF OF THE ELIBIGIBILITY LIST WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO AND SUCCESSFULLY PASS A COMPLETE PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL EXAMINATION PRIOR TO A FINAL OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT. This examination will be conducted at department expense by the hiring City's physician, with one component being a drug test which will include testing for marijuana, among other drugs.  Candidates who test positive will be disqualified.  
 
Limited Duration Information
