Examples of Duties

Works for the Building Official under the direct supervision of the Chief Electrical Inspector to conduct electrical inspections and enforce the Florida Building Code, The National Electrical Code and State Statutes.  Performs field inspections of work in progress or completed under approved building permits for conformance with the Florida Building Code.  Issues notices of violations for non-conformance and re-inspects when deficiencies are corrected. Consults with architects, engineers, general and specialty contractors and homeowners.  Investigates complaints regarding alleged code violations, determines the validity of the claims and suggests remedial action.  Performs inspections of business, government, and housing buildings. Retains certification through mandatory continuing education programs.  Performs related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

Must be able to be immediately certified as an electrical inspector through the Broward County Board of Rules & Appeals as outlined in Chapter 1, Section 104.12.3, and by the State Board of Building Code Administrators and Inspectors, Florida Statute 468.607.  Possession of a current certificate of competency as a Master Electrician/Electrical Contractor/Electrical Engineer/Certified Electrical Journeyman as described in 104.12.3 of the Broward County Administrative provisions is required.  Must have previous construction experience.  Possess a valid Florida driver's license.  A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Knowledge of building construction methods and materials. Knowledge of the building and land use codes in force and of the Florida Building Code. Knowledge of the general practices and materials of the building trades. Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with contractors, employees and the public. Ability to compile inspection data and make reports relating to code enforcement activities.  Physical abilities include light lifting up to 10 lbs. and occasionally up to 20 lbs.  Ability to climb, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk and push when performing field work at construction sites.  The noise level in this environment may be loud outdoors.  Exposure to all weather conditions, scaffolds, fumes and odors at sites.

Position is open until filled.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.

Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.

Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue ten (10) days annually; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – twelve (12) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.

Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 7% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last five base salary years times 2% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable.  Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.

Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, and an employee assistance program.

Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
