Duties Summary

Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems, electrical and mechanical equipment, and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions: 

  • Must be available for stand-by duty and be available for immediate response in cases of emergency.
Immediate vacancy is with the Department of Public Works - Traffic Division in Hilo.

Examples of Duties

  • Installs conduits, transformers, traffic signals, pull boxes, plugs, convenience outlets, and switches.
  • Rewires buildings.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, and various other types of electrical equipment and apparatus.
  • Repairs and replaces broken or defective parts in motors, switches, and fixtures.
  • Locates, tests, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Replaces fuses and incandescent and fluorescent lights.
  • Plans electrical installations.
  • Inspects traffic signal and street lighting systems.
  • Inspects and makes repairs of switch gears, registers, capacitor banks, power circuits, blowers, generators, and other related electrical equipment.
  • Makes sketches of proposed wiring systems to facilitate repair work.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and working plans.
  • Estimates cost, time, and materials needed for repair and maintenance work to be performed.
  • Reports need for major repairs.
  • May supervise others; supervises trades helpers as assigned.
  • May operate a vehicle to transport materials and employees; may operate a heavy truck with aerial bucket (GVW of 33,000 pounds).
  • Performs services in other trades when not utilized as an electrician.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: 

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • four (4) years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journeylevel electrician, and
  • a valid State of Hawai'i Journeylevel Electrician's License at time of filing;
  • a valid State of Hawai'i Driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing.  You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of the job interview.
  • possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.  For the positions at the Department of Water Supply, the Medical Examiner's Certificate is not required.  For other vacancies, the Medical Examiner's Certificate may be required as applicable to the position, prior to appointment; and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Commercial Driver License (CDL) of the appropriate class and with appropriate endorsement(s), as applicable to the position, prior to completion of probation.  This is not required for the Department of Water Supply vacancies, but future vacancies filled from this list may require the CDL.
Examination:  All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.

Knowledge of:  the theory of electricity; practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the electrical trade; installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, apparatus, and instruments; laws, rules, and standards pertaining to electrical construction and maintenance; occupational hazards; and safety practices and procedures.

Ability to:  read and interpret blueprints, electrical plans, and diagrams of electrical circuits; plan electrical wiring installations; install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment; estimate material requirements; understand and follow oral and written instructions; handle weights and loads; and work harmoniously with other employees.

Physical Requirements:  Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
