Veterans Resource Center Volunteer  - Ontario City Library
 
Are you passionate about helping others? Do you want to give back to those who have served and protected our country? Make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families! The Ontario City Library is seeking dedicated volunteers who want to serve as information specialists to ensure that veterans and veteran families of every era know how to get connected to their benefits and services.
 
Volunteers will staff the Library's Veterans Resource Center for a least one 3-hour shift per week and provide important information and referrals to veterans and their families. The Ovitt Family Community Library is located at 215 East C Street and operates Monday-Thursday, 10AM – 9PM, Friday-Saturday 10AM – 6PM, and Sunday 1PM – 4PM. The ideal volunteer must be patient, empathic, have good listening skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and respect personal boundaries.
 
By volunteering your personal time at Ontario City Library you will help to strengthen our community by providing resources and support to help our veterans. The Ontario City Library is your communities' place to connect with each other and the world. It is a place where the community is inspired by the library's materials, innovative programs and services, and are delighted by the Library staff's commitment to the community. As a Library volunteer you will have an opportunity to interact with City Staff and the public while assisting with a variety of projects and programs. This is a volunteer position with the City of Ontario. The City provides no compensation for the services performed by volunteers. Volunteers are not entitled to any benefits from the City, including but not limited to Worker's Compensation benefits. The City of Ontario Library is unable to assist individuals seeking placement for mandatory community service.

  • Support the Library's Veterans Resources Station by providing information and resources to visitors, including contact information to County Veterans Service Officers and other library or community services. 
     
  • Assist veterans and/or veteran family members with completing forms for entry into the CalVet system.
     
  • Provide guidance on benefits available to veterans and veteran families.
     
  • Maintain the confidentiality of Library customer's personal information.
     
  • Maintain records of individuals served, services provided, referrals made, and issues/topics addressed but not covered in the Library's collection.

Qualification Guidelines


Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be willing to volunteer a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week; minimum six month commitment is requested. Basic computer and Internet skills required; smart phone experience is desirable. Veterans preferred. Training will be provided.

 

Supplemental Information


This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with the City of Ontario. As such, the City of Ontario's General Process for employment does not apply to this position. All volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check. Criminal arrest and/or conviction information as well as subsequent arrest notifications will be obtained from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
