Job Description...

The Michigan School for the Deaf provides educational and residential programs and services for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This position interprets/transliterates classes at Genesee Area Skill Center. This position may also interpret between Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Hearing persons, on and off the Michigan School for the Deaf campus, in situations including but not limited to business, financial, medical, legal, social, theatrical, and educational for staff and students.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Three years of experience equivalent to an Interpreter, Deaf, including one year equivalent to an Interpreter, Deaf E8 facilitating communication between deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing persons, and hearing persons.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a valid Michigan certification with an acceptable Standard Level 3 national certificate recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a Michigan Board for Evaluation of Interpreters Test (BEI) III and an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 4.0 as identified by the State of Michigan Interpreters Minimum Standard Level credentials.

Medical/mental health, and legal endorsements are required.

Leave Time

Full time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation leave days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year, and employees receive 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount you want deducted from your paycheck.


Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
