Job Description...

Michigan Department of Environment and Quality promotes wise management of Michigan's air, land, and water resources to support a sustainable environment, healthy communities, and vibrant economy.

Student Intern Program, currently accepting applications to work at the Michigan Department of Environment and Quality.  Internship positions are limited so apply today for the Fall 2018, Winter/Spring 2019 and Summer 2019 semesters.

Are you looking for an Internship? The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) offers  opportunities to students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences.

The DEQ has opportunities for unpaid student interns to work in a variety of capacities throughout the DEQ.  Positions are offered across the State of Michigan in the DEQ district offices, the lab, or the field to match student interests and create personally fulfilling assignments and projects.  Interns work directly on key environmental issues, alongside department professionals and executives, and often branch out to work on projects involving the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture.  Offered year round, opportunities to gain academic credit are available, and the DEQ works with students' busy schedules to afford more possibilities and options for anyone interested in applying.  All levels of students are encouraged to apply, offering undergraduate, graduate, and law students challenging work in their areas of interest.  Student enrollment is NOT a prerequisite.

Examples of past projects include the following:

  • Collaborating with the Office of Great Lakes on evaluating the Governor's Water Strategy
  • Department of Natural Resources trail manual operations
  • Organizing activities and information for the Michigan Green Healthcare Conference
  • Working to enhance the DEQ's Environmental Education's teacher programs, such as Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS)
  • DNR State Parks and Waterways Analysis
  • ICC Mining and Farm Bill work group support
  • Creating, giving presentations, and leading meetings at state-wide environmental conferences
  • Preparing and comparing environmental statutes for routine analysis
  • Drafting legislative memos for administration
