Description

Family Law refers to dissolution (divorce), legal separation, child custody and visitation disputes, child and spousal support, property and debt division and restraining orders. The Family Law Self Help Center is staffed by the Family Law Facilitator, attorneys, administrative staff and interns. The center provides help in selecting and completing the appropriate forms, with information regarding the status of cases, and general legal information regarding all aspects of family law and procedure. Computers are available in the center to run a child support calculation called a "Dissomaster."

Because the Family Law Self Help Center sees both sides in cases, and must remain neutral, it cannot give legal advice, nor is there any attorney-client relationship developed in the center. Those needing legal advice are referred to State Bar approved lawyer referral services and non-profit legal services programs.

Members of the public will be helped on a "first-come first-served" basis. Service is limited to the first 40 persons each day. As Spanish interpreters cannot be guaranteed, those in need of an interpreter should provide their own as well as someone who can help them to complete the forms in English.

Essential Duties

Help provide informational assistance in areas of family law.

Help self-represented litigants navigate the court system and refers people to community-based resources that can help them with a variety of needs.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Interns in the Family Law Self Help Center include attorneys and  law students, paralegal students.  Depending on their level of experience, interns will assist with intake, directing people to the resources in the center, and referrals to outside resources.
