AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC
 

THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Air Conditioning Mechanic vacancies. Although the current vacancies exist in OC Public Works and OC Sheriff's Department, this eligible list may also be used to fill vacancies in other County departments.

OC Sheriff's Department
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department is a large, multi-faceted law enforcement agency served by approximately 4,000 sworn and professional staff members and over 800 reserve personnel. The department consists of five organizational Commands comprised of 21 separate Divisions. Collectively, these Commands and Divisions provide services including land and sea based patrol and investigative services to unincorporated county areas and to contract and task force partners at the city and county level. Additional services and responsibilities include but are not limited to; state and federal task force participation, operation and management of the Orange County jail system including contract services for I.C.E. detainees, emergency communications, forensic and coroner services, HR and personnel services, risk management and financial management.

Some positions in this job classification may be assigned to work schedules that include weekends, evening shifts, or night shifts and may be assigned to work in a correctional facility. Night-shift or evening-shift differential is paid in addition to hourly salary. An employee who is regularly assigned to a correctional facility shall be paid an additional amount per hour for hours worked.

A background check consisting of employment history, professional references, criminal check, and education verification (i.e., degree, license, and/or official transcript) will be conducted. Candidates must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of OC Sheriff-Coroner Department. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation.

Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services (N.A.C.E.S.).

THE OPPORTUNITY

 
We are seeking experienced individuals who have extensive technical expertise. Air Conditioning Mechanics are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing various types of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment; installing and maintaining heating and ventilating duct systems; and performing maintenance, repair and calibration on heating and air conditioning control devices.
 

 
 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the related experience and knowledge required for this position. They will possess a minimum of four (4) years of HVAC experience. In addition, this candidate will possess the following competencies:
 
Technical Expertise
Knowledge of and ability to install, maintain, and repair various types of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems; lay out, install, and maintain heating and ventilating duct systems; maintain and repair steam and water boilers; repair and replace control valves; rod out boiler tubing; complete scheduled inspections of all equipment, check pressure valves, belts, compression and suction; maintain records of inspections and work performed; clean coils, oils fans, change filters, and adjust air flow; troubleshoot units not functioning properly and repair or replace defective or worn parts; diagnose problems and repair pneumatic and electronic control systems; determine parts and equipment needed for maintenance and repair work and submit job estimates; review operational charts on boilers and air conditioning equipment to determine efficient operation or significant deviations from normal; and may perform the duties similar to that of a combustion controls technician.

Incumbents in this position must be able to work with and understand technical information related to the job; ensure safe work practices; and is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attention to detail and accuracy of work performed.

Accurately and concisely exchanges information with others, both orally and in writing; effectively follows written and oral instruction and is able to give instructions to others; actively listens to others for full understanding of what is being communicated; comprehends and interprets technical material related to the job; records project information to ensure accurate reporting.
 
 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED LICENSE
Possession of certification of Universal Technician as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act for dealing with refrigerants and possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher by date of appointment.

 
 
THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Written Examination | Multiple Choice Test
(Refer / Non-Refer): A multiple-choice assessment will be conducted to evaluate the applicant's knowledge and experience as it relates to the job. Only the most successful candidates will be referred to the Oral Practical Exam.

Performance Examination | Performance Test (Weighted 100%): Candidates will be evaluated based on practical job exercises designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job.

Based on the Department's needs, the recruitment / selection procedures listed above may be modified. Candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedures. All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of reference checks and education verification, also a background investigation to the satisfaction of the County may be required for some assignments..
