Examples of Duties

Performs manual labor work requiring knowledge of underground utility maintenance and construction work.  Operates various classes of vehicles including large trucks and maintenance/construction equipment.  Will occasionally supervise unskilled employees.  Keeps records and submits reports as required.  Performs related work as required, i.e., excavation, install clean outs and trouble shoot collection system issues, use Jet Vacs to clean and inspect the collection system.  Must have an understanding of regulations concerning wastewater spills and environmental issues as related to this position. Follows safety procedures and promotes a safe work environment.  A strong understanding of ethical behavior is required. Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers. This is an essential position; incumbent will be required to work extended hours during and after hurricanes or other disasters. 

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, college level work a plus.  Must possess at the time of application:
·         A current Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association System Operator Level "C" certification
·         A valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsements
 
Three years of experience in various fields of utility maintenance and construction work.  Experience in operating automotive or other motorized maintenance and construction equipment.  Ability to efficiently work without supervision.  Ability to lead unskilled workers.  Ability to successfully complete all training programs offered including confined space, hazardous materials handling, etc. Knowledge of CMOM a plus. Must obtain a Lean Six Sigma White belt within 12 months of employment. Must be able to maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment. Some job duties require personal protective equipment therefore; applicant must be able to pass a pulmonary function medical test.  Labor intensive position with ability to move up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally move up to 75 lbs.  Candidates must possess effective communication skills with the ability to speak, write, and understand English. Must be able to operate a computer. Hands on testing of computer skills, GIS and paper map reading will be conducted as a part of the interview process. Knowledge of Naviline software a plus.  Specific abilities include hearing, talking, seeing walking, bending, stooping and lifting.  Must be able to work outdoors with exposure to adverse weather conditions, fumes, dust and machinery hazards.  A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Pay Plan/Grade:  42/19

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.

Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.

Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue ten (10) days annually; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – twelve (12) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.

Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 7% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last five base salary years times 2% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable.  Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.

Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, and an employee assistance program.

Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
