Job Description

The purpose of this class is to dispatch emergency services in response to calls for assistance. The class is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency service phones, dispatching appropriate emergency services and servicing/maintaining related equipment. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed, develops work methods and sequences under general supervision and makes decisions based on defined parameters.

Position Duties

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Answers emergency services phones, records essential information and dispatches units from appropriate agencies such as law enforcement, fire department, or other emergency response activities.
  • Answers/responds to administrative phones, other communications devices, and citizen requests; decides on appropriate courses of action, dispatches assistance as required, or refers to appropriate service agency.
  • Maintains various logs, charts, and recordings to provide records of all emergency and non-emergency actions for follow-up investigative, administrative, or legal actions.
  • Operates/maintains emergency and non-emergency equipment such as computers, printers, playback systems, CAD, and other systems.
  • Maintains immediately available library of emergency reference material such as computer manuals, maps, repair logs, wrecker logs, policy/procedure SOPs, policy memos and other reference material.
  • Operates and maintains emergency and non-emergency equipment such as computers, trunked emergency and non-emergency telephone system, and mapping equipment.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.
  • Regular, dependable, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must successfully pass the Criticall Pre-Employment Test: Computer and Ability Requirements skill test administered by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.
  • Must pass a psychological examination.
  • Must pass a typing test of 45wpm.
  • . Preference is given to applicants that are certified through the State of Florida as Public Safety Telecommunicators.
  • Employees must obtain CJIS Basic Certification within six (6) months of hire (certification must be maintained for the duration of employment)
  • Applicants that are not certified at time of employment will also be required to sign a two (2) year agreement committing to work a minimum of two (2) years in the Communications Center, or reimburse the Brevard County Sheriff's Office for the cost incurred in training and testing as outlined in the agreement entitled, Employment Agreement between the Brevard County Sheriff's Office and Communications Officer Trainee.
  • Employees must successfully complete the State of Florida Public Safety Telecommunications Certification training and exam within twelve (12) months of hire (certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.).
  • Requires Valid Florida Driver's License

Additional Information

Work is performed in a secure office environment.

Work is completed in eight (8) hour shifts; employees must be able to work any shift; days/nights, weekends and holidays. Employees are subjected to extended work days and hours to meet operational needs or in the event of an emergency event.
