Description

This bulletin is to announce a promotional examination for Apparatus Operator. The date for the written examination is the week of May 7, 2018 and will be dependent on the number of qualified applicants.
 
FINAL FILING DATE: Friday, January 5, 2018 by 5:00 PM in the Human Resources Department.
 
THE POSITION:          The Apparatus Operator drives, operates, inspects and performs some basic maintenance of fire apparatus.  Duties will be in emergency and non-emergency operations.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
                                        
Experience:       
Completion of probation as a Firefighter with the City of Hayward Fire Department. Applicants must have three (3) years full time, paid firefighting experience in the Hayward Fire Department or a Fire Department which is similar to HFD.
 
An evaluation of previous experience from other departments for this purpose will be made by the Fire Chief according to the following criteria: (1) the previously employing department has response requirements similar to the Hayward Fire Department including first aid and medical emergency responses, and structural fire responses including commercial and industrial occupancies; and (2) the previously employing Department has an in-service training program to maintain the proficiency of its employees.
 
*Accredited Fire Science course work may be substituted for experience up to a maximum of twelve (12) months at the rate of three (3) semester units for one (1) month or four and one-half (4 ½) quarter units for one (1) month.
 
License:                 
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C License with proper endorsements.  Individuals not currently meeting one of these requirements should contact the Training Officer at ext. 8660 for information about how to qualify.
 
THE EXAMINATION: The examination may consist of a number of weighted parts: written test; driving test operating an engine on a predetermined street course; driving test operating a ladder truck on a predetermined street course; pumping test; ladder truck aerial operation at drill tower; ARFF driving and/or operation; Type III driving and/or operation.

Essential Duties


Drives various types of fire apparatus to the scene of fires, operates pumping equipment and related apparatus to insure that necessary water pressure is maintained at all times; inspects and maintains apparatus and equipment to insure proper working condition and makes minor repairs as needed; prepares required reports relating to maintenance, inspection, movements and usage of fire apparatus including equipment and hose records; performs hydrant maintenance and maintains complete field record of hydrants; may be assigned certain related duties of Firefighter and/or Fire Captain.

Minimum Qualifications


ABILITIES, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE CLASSIFICATION
 
Ability to: 

  • Keep records and prepare reports
  • Operate Fire Department apparatus
  • Perform all the duties of a Firefighter
Knowledge of: 
  • Modern firefighting procedures and equipment
  • Location of streets, hydrants, public buildings and local hazards
  • Departmental rules and regulations
  • Fire apparatus and equipment including proper utilization thereof:  Fireground hydraulics
Possession of a valid California Drivers License appropriate for the operation of all department apparatus.
